Cisco’s Hierarchical Design Models

Cisco divided the routers into three layers

  1. Access Layer Routers

  3. Core Layer Routers

Access Layer Router

Routers which used by a small organization and are also known as Desktop or Computer Layer Routers.

Routers Series is

  • 800
  • 1000
  • 1600
  • 1700
  • 2500

Distribution Layer Routers

Routers which used by the ISPs and also known as ISPs Layer Routers.

Routers Series is

  • 7500
  • 7600
  • 10000
  • 12000

Router Classification

Fixed Router

Fixed Routers is just like a branded PC where modification of interface is not possible therefore the examples of Fixed Routers are Access layer Routers except for 1600 and 1700 series.

Modular Router

Modular Routers is just like an assembled PC where modification of interface is possible therefore the examples of Modular Routers is Distribution and Core Layer Routers.
